Pilates mats are a necessity if you are going to be comfortable when performing your routines (after all, the floor is hard).  But there are so many different kinds of yoga pilates mats; which one should you choose?

Choosing Your Pilates Mats

Choosing your pilates mat (or yoga, for that matter) isn’t one of those life-changing moments.  The mats are fairly inexpensive, ranging in price from less than $15 to around $100.  Still, you want to be safe & comfortable, and you don’t want to have to keep buying different ones. 

So, here are some ideas on what to look for in your perfect mat for yoga or pilates.

Will you be exercising at home, or will you bring your mat to a class?  If you’re only at home, you don’t need to worry about portability like you would if you were toting it to a class regularly, so you might want a larger, thicker mat.  On the other hand, if you’re regularly taking your mat to a class, you want something that’s easily portable.

Is the material important to you?  Do you want something that’s all cotton, something anti-microbial or does it not matter, as long as it’s safe and comfortable?

How thick do you need your mat?  Pilates mats tend to be around 1/4″ thick, but there is some variation – from 3/8″ to 1/2″ (although cotton mats can get up to 3″ thick).  Plus, there’s the density factor; how “squishy” is it?  Some people like a small amount of give to their mats; others like it to be very firm.

How well does the mat stay in place?  While not so much an issue if you are doing stretching exercises, by the time you get to pilates and/or Ashtanga yoga or power yoga, you don’t want your mat moving around on you as you perform the routines.

How often will you use the pilates mats?  If you’re using it a couple-three times a week, you may not require the same durability as if you were using it daily, or it was being used multiple times a week by multiple people.

Do you have a color preference?  Is the color of your mat important to you?  These mats come in a wide range of colors, and some even have graphics.

Price – how much can you spend?  True, pilates mats aren’t all that expensive, but there is a variation in price, and they can get pricy for top-of-the-line.  When it all comes down to it, you need to buy the right mat for your workouts, and not just choose the lowest (or highest) price “just because”.  Spending too little might mean you need to buy another one sooner than you’d like.  Over-spending for your mat may waste money you can use for other things.
